Sleep is for the Dead

I just wrote a long entry about the philosophical questions surrounding sleep, then decided that was boring and deleted it. Ever wonder how many great thinkers out there decided something they wrote was boring, even though it might have been the single most brilliant thought ever to be produced? Not saying my thoughts about sleep are anything special, I’m just making a point.
That said, it’s time for some philosophical bullshit.

So, to anyone who reads this who isn’t from Wisconsin, and has no idea of what’s going on here, there’s a sort of political battle going on between Democrats and Republicans. I won’t get into the specifics, but it’s the same bullshit that’s always going on, except on a larger scale, and with more aggression. Some time ago I renounced my Liberal status, and became an Independent. I decided that it was exceptionally stupid to limit yourself to the views of a party, and that you should decide what’s right based on your own perceptions and feelings, not what a bunch of dudes in Washington decide. It’s worked for me.
I’m still pretty Liberal in my thoughts, to be honest, but I can condemn things that Democrats do. It’s just SO MUCH EASIER with Republicans.
Anyway. So, being more Liberal, I of course ‘sided’ with the Democrats in this fight, for my own reasons. The biggest chunk of this fight surrounds our recently-elected governor, Scott Walker. So, I joined a page on Facebook called ‘Scott Walker is a Douchebag.’ Mostly for kicks. They provide very good information on what’s going on in Wisconsin (though they’re obviously biased), and manage to make you chuckle every now and then. Problem is, anything, absolutely anything, that bashes Republicans or shows any small sliver of support for their cause, ends up being posted. Which brings me to my point, actually.

Sometime last night an article was posted, saying that Conservatives shouldn’t even be counted as people. I thought that was a bit much, and said so, along with “Misguided people are still people.” The rest of the commentators were either agreeing with me or angrily opposing me.

Is this what we’ve really come to?

I mean, that piece was probably just satirical, I’m sure, but the people commenting took it quite seriously. Serious to the point where it was kinda NUTS. Justifying their blatant hatred with phrases like “Well they do the same thing,” and “They say bad things about US all the time.” I’m not going to cite any cliche’ phrases about how wrong that is, but really, people?

Have we gotten to the point where we can question a person’s humanity simply because they don’t agree with us? Have we really arrived at the point where it’s okay to devalue another human being simply because they have a different view of the world? I mean, I’ll be the first to say that there are times where I just wanna punch every single Republican in the face. Their blind hypocrisy and illogical thinking makes me want to fucking scream.
But what point would that serve, hurting them? I can never prosecute someone for their opinion, only their actions. Their mind is their one free place, and whatever thoughts they choose to have are their own. I can argue with them, oh boy can I. But these people are valuing their lives as less, simply because they have a different political view. That sickens me.
There are bad people out in the world. Horrible people. People who come as close to the definition of evil as you can possibly get. People who hurt the innocent for their own misguided agenda, who preach hate, who rain down suffering upon their fellow man for their own gains. I truly want these people dead, if only so that they can no longer harm the innocent. But the thing is, THESE PEOPLE ARE STILL PEOPLE.
Being an evil little fucker makes you no less of a human being. You’re a shitty human being, let’s not kid ourselves, but you’re still a human.

The day where it’s okay to think of someone as less than human simply because of their beliefs and opinions is a day I don’t want to see. But I think it’s fast approaching.
